Shadow Mountain's
Namesake
In Loving Memory of a Good Old Friend, "SHADOW"
|

Shadow's first home was in Indiana where sadly he spent eight years on a chain and without shelter until a
caring couple persuaded his owner to let them have him. Eventually they moved to a small farm in West
Virginia where Shadow could run freely. He loved his new home and took great pride in guarding it.
However, in time his new family would find it necessary to relocate. When we stumbled upon the "Home
For Sale" sign, mistaking us for another couple, they motioned for us to enter the drive. Shadow
immediately let us know that we were on his property! I was afraid at first but they assured both me and
Shadow that everything was O.K. We cleared up the mistaken identity and they offered us a tour. Shadow
led the way, strolling so proudly as he showed us his mountain. We were excited to find such a wonderful
place but upon learning Shadow's story and how it was breaking their hearts to take him away from the
place he loved so much, we were also saddened. It was his home...no matter who's name was on the deed, it
would always be "Shadow's Mountain". We asked if he could stay. We often told people that we actually
purchased Shadow and that the house and land came with him. We couldn't change his tragic past, but were
determined that his future be filled with the love and happiness he deserved. Soon he was living in the
house with us, getting brushed several times a day, and going for car rides and weekly picnics. My husband
even built him a large, comfy bed. Shadow would often lie by my easel while I painted but would let me
know when it was time to take a break and go for a walk with him on his mountain. He lived the remainder
of his life as "King" of his mountain and now rests in the place he loved so much. Although the loss of my
constant companion still often brings me to tears, I feel blessed with the time we shared. He will always
hold a very special place in our hearts.
